Unclear On The Concept

The new album Shadows by Teenage Fanclub is supposed to be released on iTunes on June 8. You can Pre-order it there. This raises the question: why would one need to?

I remember when I was really into records (as in vinyl LPs) there was this thing about getting the new album from a band I liked not just the moment it was officially released, but before if possible. Since I knew a guy who owned a record store this wasn’t too difficult; in fact, he knew my favorite bands and would often put one of the newly-shipped albums to one side for me so I could get my hands on it before he was officially allowed to put them on his shelves. It was a big thrill, as I recall.

But the years passed, my tastes changed, maybe I finally grew up. And now I can’t remember exactly why it was such a big deal to get something first that would be on sale and available for some time. It’s not like they were ever a limited release — like concert tickets, for instance. The thrill is gone — and I don’t know why it was ever there in the first place.

    • These things are more important when you’re young, I suppose.

But not entirely. After all I’m still kinda jealous that you had an in with the record store & could get new releases early!

Anyway, my post was about something different. This is an album being ‘released’ for download on a certain date. What I assume that means is that you can’t possibly download it before that date, but on/after that date, you can.

So in that context what does “pre-ordering” it even mean? It’s not like pre-ordering it will get me the album any faster than not pre-ordering it…. The entire idea just seems to be a holdover concept from physical album sales (for which pre-ordering makes sense because (a) you’ll get it shipped to you asap and/or (b) they might run out of copies and pre-ordering helps ensure you’ll get one). This is not a physical album though. So I don’t get it!
