You Know, Like New York Magazine Does

Not having read the brilliant piece of literature that Barack Obama ‘wrote’, that memoir written by a guy who hadn’t accomplished anything whatsoever (which reminds me, stay tuned for MY ‘memoir’ coming soon to a strip-mall Waldenbooks near you!), I can’t say I was much moved by the news that a girlfriend reportedly described therein was a composite. What I can say is that I can’t pass up the opportunity to reference a Whit Stillman movie, so to that end, let me just ask, was this girlfriend perhaps named Polly Perkins?
[Charlie] Oh, God, Nick! – You did make it up.
[Nick] There is no one Polly Perkins. There are many of them.
[Charlie] So you admit you lied!
[Nick] Polly Perkins is a composite, like New York magazine does.
Of course later we get this tirade from Jane:
We know you’re a hypocrite. We know your “Polly Perkins” story was a fabrication…that you’re completely impossible and out of control with some sort of drug problem and a fixation on what you consider Rick Von Sloneker’s wickedness. You’re a snob, a sexist, totally obnoxious and tiresome. And lately you’ve gotten just weird. Why should we believe anything you say?
So, you know, the analogy only goes so far. Like I guess Rick von Sloneker = Republicans, and Obama is indeed a weird obnoxious tiresome snob, those things all work fine. But, Nick Smith, unlike Obama, could at least acknowledge that he failed to uphold the principles of the UHB.
