Encountered a blog post praising Vision Quest the other day (I could’ve sworn it was Sheila O’Malley - who, incidentally, seems to me to be one of the best bloggers there is - but can’t find any VQ on her site) and so of course I’m flipping around the channels tonight and what do I see but some old ’80s movie with Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino and Daphne Zuniga. And so I sit there fascinated. I’ve never seen this! What is this thing?

Oh. Of course. Such things have a way of showing up in my life, intruding upon my consciousness, in multiple, serendipitous ways simultaneously.

Anyway, I’m not really watching the movie very carefully (it looks ok). I must have missed it the first time around, when I was perhaps just slightly too young for its demographic. But what is really striking is just how awesome the soundtrack is. So many great songs, great ’80s songs that were always swimming around the background of my junior high days. And they’re all from this movie! It’s a strange feeling, discovering this previously-unsuspected wellspring of so much of what constitutes the aural memories of my teenage years. I feel as though I should almost be proud to have filled in this knowledge-gap; it’s as if I’ve found the pop-music equivalent of Q.
